2020 AGM Report
Hope Is Where the Heart Is
Public Education
Public education has been an integral part of the centre since its inception. We started our programs in high schools, and over the years, have expanded to elementary and post -secondary schools, community groups and organizations.
We believe that awareness and prevention education is a powerful tool to ending violence. Knowledge is power. Children cannot protect themselves if they do not have the correct information.
All of our programs are empowerment- based which ,for us, means giving people information and strategies they need to respond to any situation where they do not feel safe.
Since 1995, we have delivered public education programs in elementary schools to approximately 85,000 students and at the secondary level, to about 57,000 students.
The Child Assault Prevention Program ( CAPP), delivered to grades 1-6 , is a community- based program. This means that staff and parents receive information as well as the students. In this way, children know that their whole school community is available to them. Children also learn to be allies for each other through CAPP.
The programs we do in elementary school serve as the foundation for safety and abuse prevention. This knowledge is carried through their school years as our programs build on each other and continue to provide them with information to keep themselves safe. We are planting the seeds they will take with them throughout their lives. It is better to build strong children than to repair broken adults.
High school students learn about a variety of sexual -assault related topics that emphasize the meaning of consent and the importance of bystander intervention where there is aggression or disrespect.
In keeping with current issues and trends that impact teenagers, the curriculum now includes human trafficking, the impact of violent misogynist video games and pornography on relationships, and legal issues.
Presentations on how to talk to young children about sexual abuse and incest are also offered for parents attending life- skills programs at community organizations.
